Science Fair Winners!!

Project Title: "Flushed Away, Down the Drain!!"
Wesley and Winnie's project was one of the top winners in the school's science fair. This year our project focused around water conservation. We observed that Tucson's washes are dry most of the year. This is due to groundwater pumping, and we wanted to find ways to conserve more water at home. We changed our shower heads and toilet flappers. Did you know that toilets rank high in water waste? That is because they are "silent leakers." In testing our 2 toilets with the blue dye strips, one had a leak. By studying our family's water habits, we came up with a conservation plan: mom and dad take shorter showers (reduce the time by 1 min. each), run our dishwasher only when it is full (4 times a week instead of 7), and take smaller amounts of drinking water at a time and disposing the unwanted water in the dog bowl or on a tree/plant. These changes are adding up to lots of savings - at least 56 gallons a week (not counting the savings of the leaky toilet).
The kids are so excited about their achievement and are already making plans for next year. Winnie wants to do an experiment with oreos. Wesley feels ready to completely run a project on his own. Sounds good to me! :)
